Air ambulance services are located across the country. They are available to transport patients across the United States or half way across the world. Air ambulance services normally use highly trained crews typically consisting of doctors, nurses, and paramedics. Sometimes respiratory therapists and other ancillary medical personnel are used.

Not all services are created equal, however. Some services listed in the yellow pages are actual air ambulance services and some are flight brokers. Flight brokers take the information about the patient, trip, and about any special medical requirements and then call various companies looking for the best price. The broker then marks up the trip to include their commission and passes it on to the customer. You should know whether you're dealing with a broker or a service that operates its own aircraft.

There can be a vast difference in the quality of service from company to company. It is important that you ask for references. A reputable air ambulance service should be willing to provide references from health care providers who have used the service to transport their patients.
